Filtration in Saltwater Aquariums: The Role of Skimmers

Skimmers are essential for filtration in saltwater aquariums, where they remove proteins excreted by microorganisms, invertebrates, and fish. These efficient and energy-saving devices are effective at removing fine particles and suspended solids while also aerating the aquarium water.

The sera marin Protein Skimmer PS 130 is a particularly compact and space-saving skimmer, perfect for nano aquariums up to approximately 130 liters. Like its larger counterpart, the sera marin Protein Skimmer PS 200, it is equipped with an integrated, energy-efficient air pump that automatically draws in and mixes air with the aquarium water. Both models can be easily attached to the inside of the aquarium with an adjustable clamp, and the air and water flow rates are easily adjustable.

For aquariums up to 400 liters, there is the sera marin Protein Skimmer 400 HO, which can be flexibly installed as a hang-on skimmer or as an external pump under the aquarium. This versatility makes it an excellent choice for aquarists transitioning from freshwater to saltwater. For larger aquariums up to 600 liters, the sera marin Protein Skimmer 600 S is available, specially designed for installation in a sump filter and easy to use.
